Notes from the Energetic Quietus (EQ)
// Performative lecture + Sound installation with Tegan Moore // 2019-2020
Notes from the Energetic Quietus (EQ) explores energetic thresholds of (in)audibility in order to explore and challenge dominant imperatives to better communicate today’s energy emergencies. Instead of amplifying solutions or clearer messaging, this project asks: What might get lost in the static of energy transition? What if the subtracted, the latent, the exhausted, and the refused dimensions of the energy impasse held their own speculative potential?
Through unsound findings—sonic experiments that foreground negation, subtraction, and entropy—EQ offers an alternative way of listening to energy’s impasse, not as a problem to be overcome but as a space for inhabiting new modes of perception and speculation.
Project Iterations
Performance at TUNING SPECULATION 7: NON (November 15-17, 2019, Array Space, Toronto) – A live performative lecture that invited audiences to listen to the speculative research of a team investigating the “energetic quietus.”
Prototypes for Possible Worlds Exhibition at FAB Gallery, University of Alberta (December 10, 2019 – January 11, 2020) – As part of Speculative Energy Futures: Prototypes for Possible Worlds, EQ was re-presented as an immersive single-chaired, dimly-lit listening nook, featuring an audio recording of the lecture alongside sonic data from the project’s findings.
